EFKON & STRABAG: Austrian infrastructure expertise strengthens partnership with India
21 Apr 2026
Last week, a high-level Austrian delegation led by Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker and the Federal Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer had the opportunity to visit major infrastructure projects in India.
The focus was on two landmark developments: the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and the Delhi Metro – both realized with significant involvement of STRABAG through its wholly owned subsidiary EFKON.
Together with technological contributions from EFKON, these projects – along with the Atal Tunnel and the digital tolling system FASTag – rank among the most complex and impactful infrastructure developments in the country.
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, also known as Atal Setu:
- connects Sewri in Mumbai to Nhava Sheva (Chirle) in Navi Mumbai and has fundamentally transformed regional mobility.
- Travel time has been reduced from approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes to just 20 minutes,
- improving the daily lives of more than 200,000 commuters.
- The Atal Tunnel, with a length of 9.02 kilometers and located at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, is an engineering masterpiece.
- It ensures year-round accessibility in the Himalayas and reduces travel time to strategically important border regions by up to six hours.
These projects clearly demonstrate how engineering excellence, innovation, and international collaboration can contribute to the sustainable development of entire regions.
India as a Strategic Market of the Future
The visit also highlighted India’s growing importance as a strategic partner for Austria. The Austrian federal government sees India as a key future market and is actively promoting the expansion of economic cooperation.
EFKON and STRABAG have been successfully operating locally for many years, continuously contributing their expertise in traffic technology, infrastructure, and digitalization to major projects. This long-standing presence forms a strong foundation for further deepening the partnership between Austria and India and for jointly developing innovative mobility solutions for the future.
