Biowaste Treatment Plant Liège

Design and build contract for design, delivery, erection and commissioning of a biowaste treatment plant in Belgium, using source segregate collected biowaste

This turnkey biowaste treatment plant was realized by the consortium of and STRABAG Umwelttechnik GmbH and NV STRABAG Belgium SA. The biogas plant has a capacity of 40,000 tons of biowaste per year. The core element is the dry fermentation for biogas production using STRABAG's patented, proprietary LARAN® plug-flow fermenter. The unique aspect of the project is the fact that various plant elements and process stages are being implemented at different locations. The main plant, consisting of waste reception, processing, biogas production and thermal drying of the digestate, is being built at the existing waste incineration plant in Herstal. The digestate composting facility is being constructed at the Jeneffe green waste composting site.

The scope of works include:

  • Waste reception and pre-treatment incl. equalization for feeding of digesters
  • 2 STRABAG LARAN® dry digesters
  • Thermal drying of the digestate, using waste heat of the adjacent WtE plant
  • Post composting
  • Two stage exhaust air treatment
