Wastewater Treatment Plant Moinești

Modern wastewater treatment for a growing city - STRABAG upgraded and expanded the Moinești plant to meet European standards and ensure reliable long-term operation.

STRABAG delivered the rehabilitation and expansion of the wastewater treatment plant in Moinești, Romania, significantly improving the city’s environmental infrastructure.

The project focused on upgrading the existing Moinești North facility and complementing it with a new treatment plant in Moinești South. Both plants were designed to ensure efficient wastewater treatment in line with EU requirements and to support future urban development.

The works formed part of a broader regional wastewater program comprising three treatment plants: two facilities located in Moinești, serving both Moinești and Comănești, and one plant in Buhuși. The contract was executed as a joint venture (JV) with ERBAȘU.

With a combined capacity of over 30,000 population equivalents, the project plays a key role in improving water quality and environmental protection in the region.

Scope of Work

The project was executed as a design-and-build contract, covering all stages from planning through to commissioning. The works were delivered by STRABAG in joint venture with ERBAȘU, ensuring coordinated implementation across all project locations.

STRABAG was responsible for refurbishing the existing plant as well as constructing new treatment facilities.

This included the execution of civil, mechanical, and electrical works, along with the installation of modern automation and monitoring systems. Testing, commissioning, and operational support ensured a smooth transition to full operation.

Technical Concept

The wastewater treatment plants are based on modern mechanical and biological treatment processes, ensuring reliable and efficient operation.

Both facilities include full wastewater treatment as well as sludge stabilisation and dewatering. The newly constructed Moinești South plant also features an additional tertiary filtration stage to further enhance effluent quality.

The capacities are tailored to the local requirements:

  • Moinești North: approx. 25,500 PE
  • Moinești South: approx. 6,200 PE

Sustainability & Outcome

The upgraded infrastructure significantly reduces environmental impact and ensures compliance with European wastewater standards.

Both plants were successfully commissioned and are operating reliably. The project improves wastewater services for the population of Moinești while contributing to long-term environmental protection.

STRABAG’s integrated approach demonstrates its expertise in delivering modern and efficient wastewater solutions.
