Wastewater Treatment Plant Reșița

Modern wastewater treatment for improved environmental standards - STRABAG delivered a high-efficiency plant designed to meet EU requirements and support sustainable urban development.

STRABAG executed the design, construction, and operation of the wastewater treatment plant in Reșița, Romania, upgrading the city’s infrastructure to modern environmental standards.

The plant is designed for 125,000 population equivalents and ensures reliable and efficient wastewater treatment in compliance with EU directives for sensitive areas.

Key focus areas included:

  • Advanced biological treatment processes
  • Long-term operational efficiency
  • Integration of modern sludge and biogas systems

The project represents an important step in improving water quality and environmental protection in the region.

Scope of Work

The project was realised on a full design-and-build basis, including commissioning and operational optimisation. STRABAG was responsible for developing the complete plant concept, refurbishing existing structures, and constructing new treatment facilities.

In addition, all electromechanical systems were installed and brought into operation, complemented by supporting infrastructure such as operational buildings, laboratory facilities, and site development works.

Technical Concept

The wastewater treatment plant combines mechanical and biological processes with advanced sludge treatment. The system includes screening, grit removal, biological treatment with nitrification and denitrification, as well as final clarification.

A key feature is the integrated sludge treatment with anaerobic digestion and biogas utilisation, ensuring both efficient waste handling and energy recovery.

Sustainability & Outcome

The plant meets EU standards for sensitive areas and significantly reduces pollutant discharge into the environment. At the same time, energy is recovered through biogas use, improving the overall efficiency of the facility.

After completion in 2010, the plant entered operation successfully and demonstrated stable performance during the operational phase. The client confirmed full satisfaction with the efficiency and reliability of the system, highlighting STRABAG’s strong delivery capabilities.
